The Graduate Program Chair in the College of Business serves as a member of the Westcliff faculty and oversees graduate degree programs in the College of Business, including the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA), and the faculty who teach in those programs. Westcliff is an innovative, student centered, quality-focused institution of higher education, and university leadership is interested in faculty members who reflect these same values for full-time leadership positions.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Business, the Graduate Program Chair has direct oversight of program success and the faculty in the graduate degree programs in the college. In addition, as a member of the faculty, the Graduate Program Chair provides high quality instruction and support to students of Westcliff University. For consideration, Graduate Program Chair candidates must possess the proper credentials and qualifications to teach a wide variety of courses in the graduate business programs. Candidates for consideration must have a terminal degree in their field plus extensive work experience in a leadership role as well as a track record of excellence in teaching both in online and on campus formats.
The obligation of the Graduate Program Chair is to devote his or her full time, attention, and energies to the required duties at Westcliff. “Full-time” means, on average, 40 hours per week, excluding vacation time and paid holidays; however, this is an exempt position, and the Graduate Program Chair may need to work beyond this at times.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
The Graduate Program Chair is the direct supervisor of all faculty teaching in the MBA and DBA programs. As a faculty manager, the Graduate Program Chair is responsible for coaching and mentoring faculty through direct observation and feedback, facilitating peer-to-peer observations and providing feedback, and regular performance evaluations.
The Graduate Program Chair, in collaboration with the Associate Dean, the Undergraduate Program Chair, the LITE Center, and Human Resources, is responsible for recruiting, hiring, scheduling, and developing the faculty members in the department. The focus of this responsibility is on both ensuring an adequate number of faculty members needed to teach courses and the proficiency of faculty members to meet the standards of quality for the institution.
Teaching Responsibilities
The Graduate Program Chair is a full-time faculty member with administrative responsibilities, typically teaching two courses per semester in the online or onsite format. When this combination of classes is not available, other comparable teaching assignments will be made to satisfy the teaching requirement, to include chairing dissertations or participating on dissertation committees.
All full-time members of the faculty (including Program Chairs) are expected to excel in all aspects of teaching and serve as a model for others as to how to conduct oneself in the classroom and to facilitate student learning. This includes (but is not limited to):
- Frequent and effective communication with students
- Innovative and engaging instruction
- Fair and consistent evaluation and scoring of student work
- Timely responses and constructive feedback to student submissions
- Active contributions to classroom discussions
- ‘Above-and-beyond’ approach to supporting student success
Outside of class time, all full-time members of the faculty (including Program Chairs) are expected to maintain a minimum of 2 office hours per week, available to students both on campus and virtually, and make these hours available to all students and staff.
