Second Annual International Food & Culture Fair Takes Attendees Around the World

Westcliff University recently hosted the second edition of its annual International Food & Culture Fair at its main campus in Irvine, California. More than 150 students, staff, and faculty immersed themselves in a rich tapestry of flavors, colors, and music from around the globe, celebrating diversity and community. The event provided a platform for attendees to discover new cultures through interactive activities and savor traditional dishes.

Given Westcliff’s status as a highly-diverse institution, boasting students from more than 120 countries worldwide, this event served as a genuine global showcase of authentic cultures. Representatives from countries such as Nepal, Mexico, Jordan, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Vietnam, and many more contributed to the cultural richness on display.

Upon arrival, attendees were greeted with a “passport,” a symbolic entry into the world of the fair. This passport was used to collect stamps from different booths representing various parts of the world. Stamped passports translated into additional raffle tickets for a chance to win coveted tech items and more.

From American classics like burgers and fries to British fish and chips, Turkish shawarma, Italian Naples-style pizza, a variety of curries from India, and much more. The menu reflected the global mosaic of Westcliff. Homemade, traditional dishes brought in by students, staff, and faculty added a personal touch, turning the event into a communal celebration of heritage. Many attendees went back for seconds and even thirds, relishing the opportunity to taste the world on their plates. A friendly contest for the favorite homemade dish elevated the experience, with participants presenting their creations and sharing stories behind them.

In a closely contested decision, the title for the best dish went to the esteemed Westcliff professor, Dr. Marko Nino, for her traditional baklava—a sweet treat that was an absolute hit. Dr. Nino, already planning for the future, remarked, “I’ll have to bring double the amount for next year.”

westcliff university second annual international food and culture mentorFollowing this culinary delight, another friendly contest celebrated the best-dressed attendees adorned in various traditional outfits representing their cultures. Stories and insights were shared on these outfits and what they symbolized. One notable mention was the practical aspects of the traditional Nepali outfit worn by doctoral student Shambhu Siwakoti, who explained its utilization for trekking diverse terrains. Staff member Bianca Alonso showcased a traditional Mexican dress used for dancing performances such as the hat dance. The ultimate winner was Westcliff student mentor, Tim Anietie Udoma, who proudly represented Nigeria. Tim shared the heartfelt journey of love behind his outfit, recounting how he initially left his traditional Nigerian outfits at home when he first came to the United States to attend Westcliff. His mother, however, promptly sent a package containing all of his traditional Nigerian clothes. Tim emphasized the accepting and diverse culture at Westcliff as a reason he now embraces his heritage here in America.

westcliff university second annual international food and culture fair danceA highlight of the evening was the array of incredible performances, featuring a captivating dance performance rooted in Indian traditions, soulful singing from Nigeria, and an acoustic guitar and singing performance of Samoan origin. The undeniable talent displayed by Westcliff’s community received a warm and excited reception from the crowd, exemplifying the supportive spirit of the Warriors.

The International Food and Culture Fair serves as an excellent example of Westcliff’s commitment to its mantra of educating, inspiring, and empowering students. McKenzie Mora, Westcliff’s co-lead of social responsibility initiatives, emphasized the event’s impact: “The International Food & Culture Festival was a lively celebration of unity. Witnessing so many from Westcliff create meaningful connections and come together to exchange cultural facets and personal histories was deeply impactful.” Looking ahead, the next edition of the fair is already in the works, with Westcliff aiming to expand the event to a wider audience, inviting an even more diverse array of cultures.
