When Success Sparked a New Beginning: Dr. Kaushik Tilve’s Westcliff Story

When Dr. Kaushik Tilve stood in Times Square in 2019 watching his company celebrate its Nasdaq IPO, he thought he had reached a defining moment in his career. As an engineer helping build innovative products, it felt like success.

But amid the excitement of the celebration, another realization began to take shape. “Building a product is one thing,” Dr. Tilve reflected. “Leading teams and people is a completely different story.” That moment sparked a new journey, one that ultimately led him to Westcliff University, where he earned his Doctor of Business Administration and was selected to deliver the graduate student commencement address for the Class of 2026.

A New Kind of Leadership

Dr. Tilve’s career has always been rooted in innovation.
Originally from Mumbai, India, and now based in Salt Lake City, Utah, he leads global customer care operations, product engineering, and cross-functional technology teams at Cricut. With degrees in electronics engineering from the University of Mumbai and electrical engineering from Clemson University, he built his career solving technical challenges.

But as his responsibilities grew, so did the questions he wanted to answer. How do leaders inspire people from different backgrounds to work toward the same vision? How do organizations create purpose beyond day-to-day tasks? Those questions became the foundation of both his doctoral research and his leadership philosophy.

“My journey started to better understand businesses as a whole,” he said. “How do you lead people? How do you give them purpose? How do you align on that vision?” His dissertation explored transformational leadership and how it influences employee engagement and motivation, research that directly reflected the work he was doing every day.

Learning That Didn’t Stay in the Classroom

As a hybrid doctoral student, Dr. Tilve discovered something he hadn’t experienced during his previous degrees.

He wasn’t just learning concepts. He was applying them immediately.

“The flexibility of classes Westcliff offers through its professional program gave me the chance to learn something the night before and go try it the next day,” he said. “It was always super fresh in my mind.”

That ability to bridge theory with real-world leadership transformed the way he approached his work. Whether leading engineering teams or collaborating across countries, cultures, and disciplines, Dr. Tilve found himself putting classroom lessons into practice in real time.

“It taught me how to bring people together,” he said. “As we scale, I need to light that spark in others.” For someone leading global teams, understanding technology was only part of the equation. Building trust, creating alignment, and inspiring others became equally important.

Finding Answers Through Research

For many doctoral students, the dissertation represents the most challenging part of the journey. For Dr. Tilve, it became the most rewarding. Conducting qualitative research gave him the opportunity to listen to professionals share their experiences, challenges, and perspectives on leadership in their own words.

“It really helped me understand how people engage, how they learn, and how they get better,” he said. Transforming those conversations into research that could help organizations develop stronger leaders became one of the defining experiences of his doctoral journey.

A Westcliff Experience Unlike Any Other

Although much of his program was completed in a hybrid format, Dr. Tilve says the Westcliff experience stood apart from any previous education.

Having previously completed both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, he arrived at Westcliff with a strong point of comparison. What he found exceeded his expectations.

“The preparedness of the instructors and staff was unlike anything I’d experienced before,” Dr. Tilve said. “I’ve completed both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, but the way Westcliff comes together, from the faculty and staff to the way everything is planned and communicated, leaves very little to ambiguity. It’s aces in my book.”

The flexibility of the program also allowed him to continue advancing professionally while earning his doctorate, something he believes made the experience even more valuable.

A Beginning, Not an Ending

As commencement approached, Dr. Tilve wasn’t thinking about finishing school. He was thinking about what comes next. “I’m excited to step into this new world and see what it has to offer,” he said. “I feel prepared, and that’s very important.”

That optimism carried into his commencement address, where he encouraged fellow graduates to see their degrees not as the finish line, but as the beginning of new opportunities. “My journey hasn’t been too different from many other wonderful students here,” he said. “This is a start. The world is ours for the taking.”

Prepared with new knowledge, strengthened by years of professional experience, and inspired by the lessons learned through his doctoral journey, Dr. Tilve left commencement ready for the next chapter, one focused not simply on building innovative products, but on building innovative organizations.

His story is a reminder that leadership isn’t defined by titles or technical expertise alone. It’s shaped by the willingness to keep learning, to invest in others, and to inspire people to achieve more together.
