Meet Your 2026 Commencement Speaker: Maria Toyoda

Westcliff University is proud to welcome Dr. Maria Toyoda as the 2026 Commencement speaker.

As President and CEO of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), the accrediting body that upholds Westcliff’s academic standards, Dr. Toyoda brings a perspective few speakers can offer. Her career has been dedicated to ensuring that a university degree delivers on its promise, with rigor, relevance, and real-world impact.

A Leader Shaping Higher Education

With nearly three decades of experience, Dr. Toyoda has built a career at the intersection of academic excellence, strategy, and global policy. Her background includes:

  • President and CEO of WSCUC since 2025, one of the most influential roles in higher education
  • Leadership roles at institutions including Stanford, Villanova, and Suffolk University
  • Executive Vice President and Provost at Western New England University
  • Fellowships with the Council on Foreign Relations and the Social Science Research Council
  • Visiting researcher at the International Monetary Fund
  • Degrees from Stanford University and Georgetown University

Her work has consistently focused on one critical question: Are institutions truly preparing students for what comes next?

Why Her Voice Matters Now

At a time when the value of higher education is being closely examined, Dr. Toyoda’s voice carries weight. She has spent her career balancing institutional accountability with meaningful student outcomes, ensuring that education is not just a credential, but a transformation.

On Commencement day, she will address a graduating class that reflects that very mission.

For the Class of 2026, this is more than a speech. It is a moment to hear from a leader who has helped shape the standards behind their degree and who understands the responsibility and opportunity that come with it.

A Moment Worth Celebrating

Commencement on June 27 will celebrate not just achievement, but the journey behind it and the future ahead. Whether you are crossing the stage or cheering from the audience, it is a day that belongs to the entire Westcliff community.

More details will be shared in the coming weeks. For questions, please contact the Commencement team at commencement@westcliff.edu.
