Westcliff University Canada Expands into the Greater Toronto Area with Grand Opening of Markham Campus
There are moments that feel bigger than a ribbon cutting, and Westcliff University Canada’s grand opening in Markham, Ontario, part of the greater Toronto area, was one of them.
From the very first conversations over brunch to the energy of a packed room for the afternoon ceremony, the day felt like a true coming together of leaders, partners, and a shared vision for the future of education and innovation in Ontario.
The morning began with an intimate brunch alongside Markham’s Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Westcliff University’s executive team, and members of the Westcliff Board of Directors. It was a chance to reflect on the journey that brought the university to Canada, and the opportunity ahead.
By the afternoon, that quiet anticipation had turned into celebration. More than 100 guests gathered inside ventureLAB for the official grand opening and ribbon cutting, including the Hon. Nolan Quinn, Ontario’s Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, and Chris Collucci, President and CEO of the Markham Board of Trade.
But this wasn’t just about opening a campus. It was about what that campus represents.
Located inside ventureLAB, one of Canada’s leading innovation hubs, Westcliff University Canada was designed from the ground up to connect education directly with industry. At its core is the Master of Information Systems Technology (MIST) program, focused on high-demand fields like AI, cybersecurity, and smart manufacturing, and built to give students real-world, career-connected experience from day one.
That connection between education and opportunity was a theme echoed throughout the day.
“Today marks an important milestone not just for Westcliff, but for the continued growth of career-focused post-secondary education in Ontario. Where education, entrepreneurship, and industry come together to drive growth and opportunity,” said Minister Nolan Quinn during the ceremony.
For Westcliff University President and CEO Dr. Anthony Lee, that vision has always been central to the institution’s mission.
“It’s not just about degrees, it’s about impact. It’s about equipping individuals with the skills, mindset, and opportunities to create meaningful change.”
That mindset is what led Westcliff to Markham, part of the greater Toronto area, a region at the heart of Canada’s tech and innovation economy. Toronto is North America’s third-largest tech hub and widely dubbed “The Silicon Valley of the North.”
Mayor Frank Scarpitti captured that connection in his remarks, pointing to both the strength of the local ecosystem and the real demand for future-ready talent:
“We’re Canada’s high-tech capital, home to more than 1,500 technology and life sciences companies. The innovation happening here isn’t just local—it’s having a global impact. And the reality is, companies across every industry are going to be looking for people who understand emerging technologies and know how to apply them.
Programs like the ones Westcliff is bringing are exactly what we need. The world is changing quickly, and education has to keep pace. It’s not just about IT jobs—innovation is touching every sector. Every organization is looking for people who can make a difference.”
That idea, that talent is the driving force behind innovation, was reinforced by ventureLAB CEO Hugh Chow, who highlighted the importance of investing in people as much as technology.
“If we want to continue to build momentum, we need to invest in people, and this partnership helps bridge the gap between technical innovation and market-ready talent.”
It’s a gap Westcliff is intentionally working to close.
By placing the campus directly inside an active innovation hub, students aren’t just learning concepts, they’re surrounded by startups, founders, and real business
challenges. Through initiatives like the Innovation Sandbox, they’ll have the opportunity to work alongside industry, gaining experience before they even graduate.
For Sumit Bhatia, Executive Director of Westcliff University Canada, that approach reflects a broader shift in what education needs to become.
“We didn’t just build a campus, we built it inside an innovation hub, because education can no longer exist in isolation. Integration is everything.”
That philosophy was felt throughout the day, not just in the speeches, but in the energy of the room, the conversations between partners, and the excitement surrounding what comes next.
While the ribbon cutting marked an important milestone, it also marked a beginning.
With its first Canadian campus now open, Westcliff University is stepping into Markham with a clear purpose: to help bridge the gap between education and industry, and to prepare the next generation of leaders for a rapidly evolving world.
